Dungarees haven’t always been on the top of your list when you want to make a style statement. Let’s face it, dungarees are a little tough to figure out – the fit, the styling, the possibility of looking like a person who worked in an old Western movie about construction workers, and a few of us suffer from the childhood trauma of being forced to wear them.
Thankfully, dungarees have evolved from plain denim overalls to make their entry into the Fashion ‘Hall of Fame’ with prints, colour blocks, skirts and a lot more. With fashion bloggers, couture designers and celebrities dawning this once upon a time utilitarian staple, we’re left to wonder whether we gave dungarees enough of a chance in the first place.
So here’s our take on how to style dungarees, taking a few cues from the people aka style divas, who rock this look like there’s no tomorrow.
1. Casual It Is:
The best way to achieve a casual laid back look with dungarees is to Keep. It. Simple. So, while our fashion evergreen SJP and the new ‘girl next door’ Yami Gautam, go back to the dungaree roots with their denim overalls and plain tees, Jennifer Anniston and Emma Watson team up their block coloured cotton overalls with a minimalistic white tank and shirt respectively. Add a pair of sneakers or slip-ons and get a grounded look for your day out.
2. The Formal Brigade:
Wearing dungarees to a formal do always casts a formidable shadow of doubt on your thought process but if you chose the right dungaree and style it with the right accessories, you’re bound to be the talk of the town.
Kylie Jenner looks drop dead gorgeous in her brown colour block overalls as she teams it up with a simple white crop top and gold stilettos. The ‘Made in Chelsea’ star Millie Mackintosh adds a feminine touch to her black skirt dungaree with a sheer white top, while Ms. Parker dons the original denims with a baggy white shirt and killer heels. Socialite Olivia Palamero goes the SJP way with her white formal shirt but adds a hint of colour with her eye popping purple bag (P.S- How killer is her hair do *gasp*).
3. The Festive Feel:
The evolution of the dungarees took an epic turn for the better with the short dungarees; Be it a dungaree skirt or shorts, don’t be afraid to mix it up with prints and the colours of the season to rock this trend.
‘The Carrie Diaries’ star, Anna Sophia Robb mixes prints to perfection with her dungaree and boat neck tee combination. Off-duty model Cara Delevingne struts her dungarees perfectly in this colour block orgasm, while Millie Mackintosh adds a touch of glam to her pinafore dress with ankle length boots and an embroider heavy tee. Dungaree talk would be incomplete without fashion blogger Alexa Chung who has some fun with a printed tee and tie-up straw wedge heels.
4. Grunge Attack:
Dungarees can be really fun when you’re going for a street inspired ‘grunge’ look. It doesn’t take much to nail this look except a ‘haters gonna hate’ attitude and the right accessories.
Miley rocks the look with her all leather overalls teamed up with a short crop top, turned around cap and blingy sneakers. Rocker mom ‘Gwen Stephani’ knows all about street style as she steps out in her baggy white shirt and dungarees, adidas sneakers and yummy shades. Rihanna mixes it up with her front open dungarees and printed tee. A lose printed top and studded flats is another way to keep it street simple.
